MSW Students Win President’s Award for Community Service and Social Action

One of the Community Projects (required for graduating MSW students) won the President’s Award this year!  The students, Jessica Bass, Taralyn Keese, Adrianne Torres, Dawn Williams, and Brittany Williams, worked with Citizens United for Better Education (C.U.B.E.) and partnered with the ACLU.  Their project was to coordinate a Community Forum to address the “School to Prison Pipeline” of criminalizing behaviors of public school students, especially those from low-income families and minority groups.  The purpose of the Forum is to raise awareness of this issue, bridge relationships with public schools, develop strategies to engage parents and educators, and provide data on the extent of this issue within our community.

The students were honored at the President’s Awards for Community Service and Social Action on April 8.  We are proud of the work that these students (and all the MSW students) do to further the mission of social justice within our community.  Congratulations!!!!!

Student and Community Projects

M.S.W. Community Projects
Georgia State University's School of Social Work works with Atlanta area agencies/organizations who would like to  have second year Masters students work with them on a community project. Projects typically involve 4 M.S.W. students who, in partnership with an agency, plan, implement, and evaluate a semester-long community project. Project conceptualization takes place each year from September to December, while implementation, evaluation, and final presentation of projects takes place January to April.  Click here for recent community projects.
