The Physical Therapy Class of 1972 held a reunion on March 8th, 2008 at GSU’s Indian Creek Lodge. Eight of the ten graduates attended, coming from far and wide! Organized by Harvelyn Duncan Smith and Jane Fitzpatrick Deloach, the evening was a wonderful time of memories, laughter, and catching up. Six faculty members, including program founder Pat Yarbrough, Pearl Petteren, Carol Coogler, Jim Church, Dave Martin, and George Salter were in attendance. The 2008 Health Sciences Career Fair was held on Thursday, March 20, 2008 in the Student Center Ballroom. The Career Fair was presented by University Career Services and co-hosted by the Division of Physical Therapy and the School of Nursing. Thirty-five vendors were in attendance, including hospital systems and physical therapy private practices. It was wonderful to see alumni from Georgia State’s PT program there as well. The Marquette Challenge Conference, “Evidence-Based Examination and Treatment of the Upper Quadrant: An Integrated Approach,” held March 14-16, 2008 in Kell Hall, was a big hit, complete with a category 2 tornado! Beth Tieman, PT, PhD was awarded the Hughes Award from the Pediatric Section of the APTA at the Combined Sections Meeting in Nashville, Tennessee. Dr. Tieman’s article, "Variability in
Mobility of Children with Cerebral Palsy" that appeared in the Fall Issue of Pediatric Physical Therapy (2007) was selected as the best paper published as a result of work completed while in an educational program. Congratulations, Dr. Tieman! Read more about our faculty.
Dr. Gordon Warren’s innovative research on muscle recovery from injury is highlighted in the Spring 2008 Georgia State Magazine. His research, funded by the Department of Defense, is focused on discovering ways to stimulate healing. Read more about our faculty.

3rd year DPT student and Faculty present at SEACSM 3rd year DPT student Nicole Park presented a poster at the Southeastern conference of American College of Sports Medicine (SEACSM) in Birmingham, Alabama in February. Accompanied by faculty advisor Gordon Warren, PhD, Nicole presented the study, “Does Caffeine Ingestion Attenuate the Strength Loss Following the Performance of Injurious Eccentric Contractions?” Third year co-investigators on the project include Kim McKibans and Rob Moresca. 2006 Alumnus and Faculty publish book chapter 2006 Alumnus Leigh Palubinskas, PT, MPT and Gordon Warren, PhD published a chapter in the Peter Tiidus’ text, Skeletal Muscle Damage and Repair. Their chapter, “Human and Animal Experimental Muscle Injury Models,” provides a systematic review of the experimental models of injury used over the past three decades. Read more about our alumni.

Congratulations, Dr. Wang! Tai Wang’s application for Fellow status for the Research Consortium of the American Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance was accepted. PT Students Attend Student Conclave in Pennsylvania, October 2007

Philip Fabrizio, PT, MPT, MS, is a certified ergonomics assessment specialist and is completing his Doctor of Physical Therapy degree at Marymount University. Prior to joining the faculty at Georgia State University, Philip directed the anatomy lab and was a Clinical Instructor at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA, and worked in outpatient and acute-care clinical settings. His research involves descriptive anatomical studies and aging effects on skeletal muscle.

Jeannette Bull, PT, MHS, MTC, is certified in Manual Therapy and is completing her Doctor of Health Sciences degree from the University of Indianapolis. In addition to her 20 years of clinical experience in outpatient and acute-care settings and academic experience at Western Carolina University, Jeannette most recently served as a clinic director for Physiotherapy Associates. She is the Academic Coordinator of Clinical Education for the Division.

Accompanying Dr. Joe Donnelly, 21 second and third year DPT students attended the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists in St. Louis. Georgia State University had the largest group of students attending this conference from all of the programs in the country.

Students and Faculty Work to Prevent Falls in Older AdultsUPRIGHT! is a Fall Prevention Program developed by the Division of Physical Therapy, in collaboration with DeKalb Senior Services.
Under the direction of Leslie Taylor, PT, PhD, the 3rd year DPT students developed the evidence-based program in Spring of 2007. Second year DPT students and faculty member Dr. Niamh Tunney joined the team for the pilot implementation of the 10-week program from September to December at a local Senior Center.
