Chris Rosenbloom, associate dean and associate professor of Nutrition, commented on the plans of two national sports stadiums to add organic hot dogs to their menus. Robbie Friedmann, professor of Criminal Justice, commented on the effectiveness of the new computerized statistical data program being used by the Gwinnett County Police Department. Atlanta Journal-Constitution, “Atlanta ranks 3rd in nation in crime,” November 23, 2004
Robbie Friedmann, professor of criminal justice, commented on Atlanta’s continued poor national crime rankings saying that the Morgan Quitno crime report, like many other national crime reports, do not show the whole picture. Friedmann says that crime reports do not show that crime is more prevalent in certain neighborhoods. He adds that these reports give visitors a sense that the city is dangerous. Friedmann says that many visitors to the city are likely to remain in the midtown and downtown convention areas and are highly unlikely to experience crime, particularly violent crime, while in Atlanta. Myra Carmon, professor of nursing and president of the Georgia Nurses Association expresses regret that no nursing schools in the state of Georgia received any of the $15 million in federal grants to increase availability of student scholarships and for improvements in the nursing program. The funding is part of a grant provided by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Carmon says she is surprised that Georgia didn’t get any of the funding, particularly in light of Georgia’s growing nursing shortage. The shortage is expected to worsen by 72% by 2020. Carmon added that this funding would help ease the shortage by providing for additional facilities and faculty, another key component of the nursing shortage.
