Programs of Study
The Byrdine F.
Lewis School of Nursing (BFLSON) was originally
established in 1969 as a Department of Nursing.
The Georgia Board of Regents approved the
Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1966, the
Master’s degree in Nursing in 1973, and the PhD
in Nursing in 1986. The BFLSON contributes to
the University through high quality programs in
nursing with 277 students in the baccalaureate
nursing program (187 traditional, 75
accelerated, and 15 RN-BS), 170 in the master’s
program and 27 in the PhD program.
The mission of the School of Nursing is to:
educate nurse clinicians, practitioners,
scholars, educators, leaders, and researchers;
develop health-related community partnerships;
and engage in research and other forms of
scholarship. This education is provided in a
multi-cultural urban setting, and is
accomplished through a unique professional and
academic interdisciplinary environment. This
community-focused approach enriches student
learning, fosters leadership development, and
furthers the pursuit of science.Degree

transfer into the
traditional or
accelerated program at
Georgia State University
to complete their
studies.

The RN-BS Bridge program
is specially designed
for students who have
already practiced as a
licensed R.N. and have
an associate's degree or
nursing diploma who

B.S. in nursing.

Master of Science
Designed to prepare
nurses for a variety of
advanced practice roles
with these specialty
areas:
Post-Master's
Certificate program
Designed to provide an
avenue for registered
nurses with masters'
degrees in another
nursing specialty area
to obtain a certificate
in a different nursing
specialty. Post-Master's
certificates are offered
in the following
specialties/roles: Adult
Health-CNS, Child
Health-CNS/PNP, Family
Nurse Practitioner, Perinatal-CNS/Women's
Health NP, and
Psychiatric/Mental
Health-CNS.

Bridge
