We are looking forward to welcoming you to the Byrdine F. Lewis School of Nursing. On this website you will find information regarding our online and onsite orientations and how to access important information you will need as you begin your doctoral studies.

In the web-facilitated format, our doctoral courses will include onsite (approximately four times per semester) and online (synchronous and asynchronous) courses. The schedule for onsite and synchronous online courses will be available from your professor. Students are expected to attend all synchronous and onsite classes; this includes being on time for the start of the class.

All new students are required to review the online orientation for the doctoral program which is available to you via “uLearn” (formerly known as “WebCT”). Please review the PowerPoint presentations prior to the onsite technology orientation which will be announced on this site.

To access uLearn, you will need to send your student network ID to our Education Technology Specialist, Miguel Muirhead. Once added to uLearn, you will be able to access the following from the Graduate Student Resource Center:

  • Doctoral Program Orientation
  • Information about computer specifications for successful access to “vClass”
  • Information about headsets that will be necessary for synchronous online classes (vClass)
  • Class schedules (also attached in this communication)

It is important that you access this information at your earliest convenience so that you and your computer are ready to begin online classes at the start of the semester. Please note that most of this information is available at this site via the links on the right. The mandatory onsite training classes will be announced on this site. The orientation will include:

  • Welcome and introductions (9-10 AM)
  • Library orientation (10:15 – 11:15 AM)
  • Lunch with Advisors (11:30 AM– 1 PM)
  • EndNote training (1 – 2:30 PM)
  • vClass and uLearn training (2:30 – 5 PM)

As a reminder, all students are expected to be acquainted with the policies and procedures that apply to the doctoral program. Students may review the Nursing Doctoral Graduate Handbook. The Graduate Catalog is also online. Both of these documents include policies that are in effect during the academic year that you are admitted. Please visit both of these websites. We wish you much success in your nursing education endeavors. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
