    Criminal Justice alumnus Weldon L. Kennedy (M.S. 1989) recently authored a book, On-Scene Commander: From Street Agent to Deputy Director of the FBI.
      Published by Potomac Books, this work details Kennedy’s four decades of work in federal law enforcement. Kennedy retired from the FBI in 1997 as its deputy director, the organization’s second-highest position and its highest nonpolitical appointment. During his thirty-three-year career, he served in Portland, Oregon; Las Vegas; Miami; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Newark; Boston; Jackson, Mississippi; Phoenix; Atlanta; and four tours at FBI headquarters. Now a vice chairman and group executive for the security services firm Guardsmark, Kennedy lives in Prescott, Arizona.

    The Department of Criminal Justice and the Criminal Justice Student Association would like to invite all criminal justice majors to a Welcome Back Reception on September 10th from 12:30-2:00 in the West Exhibit Area on the 2nd Floor of the Urban Life Building.  Those interested in majoring in criminal justice are also invited.  Light refreshments will be provided.  Please stop by anytime between 12:30 and 2:00.

    Mary Finn appointed Associate Provost
    Mary Finn, professor of criminal justice, was recently appointed Associate Provost for Institutional Effectiveness. This position starts on May 14 and she will be responsible for overseeing Academic Program Review and Assessment, Administrative and Support Unit Review and Assessment, Institutional Research, Assessment of Student Learning Outcomes, Decision Support Services, and reporting as is necessary for SACS accreditation.

    The Department of Criminal Justice is pleased to announce and welcome the appointment of three new faculty for the 2007 – 2008 academic year.
    • Brian K. Payne (Ph.D., Indiana University of Pennsylvania) will assume his duties as Professor of Criminal Justice and Chair of the Department on 1 July.
    • Timothy Brezina (Ph.D., Emory University) will assume his duties as Associate Professor of Criminal Justice in August.
    • Sue-Ming Yang (Doctoral Candidate, University of Maryland) will assume her duties as Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice in August.

    Change in Criminal Justice Internship (CRJU 4930 and CRJU 4940): Effective immediately students will no longer be afforded the option of taking Criminal Justice Field Instruction (CRJU 4940) for 6 credit hours.
    CRJU 4940 is now a graded course that will impact a student's GPA. All Criminal Justice majors are required to enroll in 3 hours of CRJU 4940 and 3 hours of CRJU 4930 (Internship Seminar in CJ) during the last semester of their undergraduate degree work. All students are required to earn a grade of C or better in these courses in order to graduate. Any questions about this change in policy should be directed to Sue Carter Collins, Internship Coordinator.

    Mary Finn was awarded a grant from the National Institute of Justice for $451,864.  The title of the grant is:  Process Evaluation of Efforts to Combat Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children in Atlanta.  The following faculty are serving as co-investigators on the project:  Brenda Sims Blackwell (Criminal Justice), Leslie C. Jackson (Psychology) and Jim Wolk (Social Work).
