Frequently Asked Questions

The following information will hopefully answer the general questions you may have related to your application to a graduate program in the College of Health and Human Sciences at Georgia State University. For additional information on the specific program you are applying to, click here.

GENERAL QUESTIONS

Q. How do I apply to one of the graduate programs in the College of Health and Human Sciences?
A.
  1. Apply Online.

  2. Print/Download the Application Materials and Forms.
Q. What is the application deadline?
A. There are different Application Deadlines for each program. Please check your program’s deadlines carefully and plan accordingly.

Do not submit an application after the posted deadline without checking with our office. If we are no longer accepting applications for the program and term you are applying, we can not refund application fees, and can not return application materials.

Q. What additional materials other than the application do I need to submit?
A. The application is only one piece of your admissions packet. Each program requires different materials and documents, which must also be received by the deadline. Your program’s requirements are listed under Print/Download Application Materials and Forms.
Q. If I applied previously, how do I reapply?
A. New application forms with updated information are required if you are applying for a term that is at least one year after your original application. The application fee can be carried over for two additional semesters past your original term of application, i.e., if you apply for a fall semester, it would be good for the following spring and summer semesters. If you are reapplying for a program that accepts only once a year, you will have to submit a new application fee. In general, application materials are kept on file for two years. Documents such as transcripts and test scores, if still within the time limit, can be re-used for a second application.

If you are updating your term of application with the one-year period, you must notify our office in writing or by email by the posted deadline.
Q.  If I applied to a graduate program in another college at Georgia State, can those materials be used?
A. Depending on how long ago you applied, you may request a transfer of records to have your transcripts and test scores sent to our college. You should contact the other college’s graduate admissions office to make this request.
Q. Where should I send my materials?
A. If you are sending your application materials through the U.S. Postal Service, all forms, fees, transcripts, letters of recommendation, and other required materials should be sent to:

Office of Academic Assistance
College of Health and Human Sciences
Georgia State University
P.O. Box 3995
Atlanta, GA 30302-3995

If you are shipping your application materials via FedEx, UPS or DHL, all materials should be sent to:

Office of Academic Assistance
College of Health and Human Sciences
Georgia State University
Urban Life Building, Room 811
140 Decatur Street
Atlanta, GA 30303

TRANSCRIPTS

NOTE: Transcripts from all colleges and university are required. Sending only your degree transcript is not sufficient. All transcripts must be received in order to process your application.

Q. What transcripts do I need to submit?
A. You must submit two transcripts from each college and/or university attended, except from Georgia State University, with your completed application packet. You will collect transcripts from each institution and submit them unopened to the Office of Academic Assistance.
Q. I am currently an undergraduate student at Georgia State. Since the university already has my transcripts, is it necessary to send them again?
A. Yes. The transcripts sent to Undergraduate Admissions are not available for our use. The same is true if you applied to Georgia State as an undergraduate student but never attended.
Q. Do I need to submit transcripts from the schools where I only took one or two courses?
A. Yes. We need transcripts from each school, regardless of length of stay or if the courses and grades are listed on another school’s transcript. We require original transcripts for all coursework completed.
Q. If I am attending another school when I apply for the graduate program, when do I submit that transcript?
A. You should send transcripts with the latest information and most recent grades when you apply. A supplemental transcript showing final grades may be required before an admissions decision can be made, or, at the latest, before you begin the program.

TEST SCORES

Q. What graduate entrance exam is required?
A. All programs accept the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). A few programs will accept another test in place of the GRE. Please check your program’s instructions for alternate exam information.

Please note:  While the School of Nursing will accept the GRE for master's degree programs, the preferred test is the Miller Analogies Test (MAT).  The GRE is required for the Ph.D. program in nursing.

Q. Do I have to submit the test scores by the deadline, or take the test by the deadline?
A. Official test scores must arrive in our office by the application deadline. We recommend you take the test no later than two months prior to the deadline. We ask that you include a copy of your test score with your admission materials, which will expedite the processing of your application. While your application can be reviewed with a test score copy, official test scores are required for admission.

If you wait until after the deadline to take your entrance exam, your file can not be considered for admission.

Q. Where should I send my scores?
A. Georgia State University’s institution code is 5251. Sending your scores to this code is sufficient. A department code is not used.

For further information and registration, visit the GRE website at http://www.gre.org/, or call 1-800-GRE-CALL.
Q. Can I take the test more than once?
A. You may take the General Test (computer-based or paper-based) only once per calendar month and no more than 5 times within any 12-month period. This applies even if you canceled your scores on a test taken previously.

INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS AND APPLICANTS WITH INTERNATIONAL CREDENTIALS

Q. Do I need to send transcripts from schools outside the United States?
A. If you have completed all or part of your education outside the United States, you are required to have your foreign credentials evaluated by an independent evaluation service. It is recommended that you use Josef Silny & Associates, Inc. We will also accept evaluations of foreign credentials from Educational Credential Evaluators, Inc. and World Education Services.

If you use Josef Silny & Associates, Inc., you will not need to provide transcripts to Georgia State University. Silny will send us copies of your transcripts. If you use another credential evaluation agency, you are required to submit transcripts by the appropriate deadline to our office.

Q. Do I need to take the TOEFL?
A. If your native language is not English, you must take the TOEFL, unless you have received a bachelor’s degree from an accredited U.S. institution. The test scores can not be more than two years old. While official scores must be reported from the Educational Testing Service, we ask that you send a copy of your test score report with your application materials. TOEFL information can be found at http://www.toefl.org/.

International applicants living in the Atlanta area may take the Georgia State Test of English Proficiency (GSTEP) in place of the TOEFL. GSTEP information is found by choosing “GSTEP information and faq’s” on the www.gsu.edu/iep website.
