College faculty recognized for their work in the international community

Dr. Dan Benardot, associate professor of nutrition and Dr. Karen Gieseker, assistant professor of public health, recently received Georgia State University’s International Excellence Awards. 

Dr. Benardot was recognized for his nutritional health and hydration plan implemented by the gold-medal winning United States Gymnastics Team at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games and the medal-winning USA marathoners at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games.  He was the first American appointed to the Medical Commission of the international governing body for gymnastics (Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique) and has led over a dozen sports nutrition workshops and invited around the world.  

Dr. Gieseker's award is in recognition of her international teaching, research and service, which includes developing graduate global health courses, conducting applied research in Tanzania and Kenya, and teaching public health law courses as part of the College of Law's study abroad program in Rio de Janerio, Brazil.
