WSB-AM Radio, “New bill to require jury majority not unanimity for death penalty,” January 30, 2007
Elizabeth Beck, associate professor of social work, commented on a new bill state legislators are considering for juries in death penalty cases.  Current law requires that jurors in death penalty cases come to a unanimous decision on both the verdict and whether the capital punishment should be applied.  The new bill would allow juries to impose the death penalty with only a majority vote.  Beck commented that given the seriousness of the punishment, unanimous decisions make sense and should remain the law.  In a second clip on WSB radio, Beck stated that if the judge overides the jury's verdict, it could make the post conviction stage more complicated and difficult for both sets of families.
